I set out to make a movie about joyful encounters with people and the
things that make them happy and that’s how I met Jake and Merlin. Though I'd had a very different project in mind, as John Ellis writes in Documentary: Witness and Self-Revelation, documentary is a cinematic genre that finds its form in its subject. That's what makes it exciting to film one: to be open to the wonder you run into everywhere in the world, to make a space for others to tell their story, to see things from a fresh perspective, and to realize how every context, place, and moment is rich with opportunities to explore the simple and profound connections that make our communities beautiful and whole. I was inspired by Jake and Merlin's open heartedness and the generous ease with which they shared what was most meaningful in their lives. This short film attempts to capture the experience of hearing their music with all the heart and presence they put into it, and sharing in the happiness of building community through open encounters and art.
